Interview with The Vampire in Second Life: Lord Insomnis Moonites

Who could say that an “interview with a Vampire” was possible? In Second Life, where the dreams come true, yes. One of the powerful colective universal myths is, in fact, the Dracula´s Legend from Nosferatu, Brujah, now Twilight movie… The Vampire Dream is alive!

He is Turkish in real life and … a Vampire Lord in SL… and a misterious legend to discover… with blood.
The secrets of a Vampire who lives in XXI Siecle

Let´s begin explainning a little to real life -no second life users- how works the vampire system, inworld: Bloodlines. How is the game? When did you began and why? how you grow up as vampire?

Insomnis Moonites: I have to say that it was not planned. I think I was born in SL about around May 2008, after I broke up with my real-life girlfriend and was simply looking for something new to kill some time with which would give me some space to breath. My introduction to vampirism in second life was almost instantenous, I would say in the first week of my second life experience.

The vampire system in SL is called The Thirst: Bloodlines, which is shortly known as Bloodlines. To an extent it is based on the World of Darkness concept which roleplayers know well and PC-gamers had the chance to experience with the game Vampire: The Masquerade.

However, RP elements in the game are somehow limited and the biggest criticism is the commonly-accepted profit-oriented strategy of the game’s developer in SL. In brief, I would say Bloodlines is a soul-collecting game rather than a vampyric combat RP.

Once bitten by an avatar who is in the Bloodlines system, you are infected with the curse and your soul is claimed by the person who has first bitten you. The next step is to acquire the HUD (heads-up display) from the game’s developer which grants you your fangs and other basic vampyric abilities like smoke-screen (turning into mist). Once your avatar’s blood is sucked dry by another vampire and refilled the same way, you are a vampire – and you lose your soul.

The following steps are joining an existing clan or finding your own clan, and inding new victims to collect souls from. Although there are multiple means of advancing in the game (such as blood wealth), the main indicator for power is the number of souls one possesses.

More souls give you a higher rank in the vampyric community, and the souls your minions collect (those vampires in your clan who pledged allegience to you) are also counted in your total soul count. Since combat is not an available option with the existing bloodlines HUD, the main objective is enlarging the number of your clan and thus souls.

“The Brujah are a fictional clan of vampires in White Wolf Game Studio’s World of Darkness books and role-playing settings. Their name is derived from Bruja, the Spanish word for witch -Anne Rice: “The Vampire Chronicles”- (Vampire: The Masquerade), the Brujah are characterized mostly as anarchists.”

You are called “The Antediluvian”, What means?
When did you began to create your own clan? Which are the differences of your vampire clan from others?

I was always symphathetic to the Brujah clan due to the main character in the Vampire: The Masquerade PC game. So, when the time came for me to be embraced and join a clan in SL, I didn’t do much thinking and joined the existing Brujah clan.
When you look into vampyric history and myths, the Brujah were not actually anarchists since the beginning but turned out to be so in centuries following the destruction of their fabled city Carthage.

Accordingly, Brujah in origin are warriors and philosophers with a cause, not lose canons. However, the common perception of modern Brujah’s anarchic nature was also dominant in the clan I was in and a series of events within the clan led me to depart and establish the clan New Brujah Carthage.

Antediluvian is also a term used in vampyric mythology. They are believed to be the 3rd generation vampires, the first generation being the first vampire Caine and the second generation his three children Enoch, Irad and Zillah. Story says that there were thirteen Antediluvians, who created the thirteen original clans which include the Brujah.

What offers a Vampire Clan in SL?

I have to say that this really depends on the clan you are in and to that clan leader’s vision. My goal was to create a clan which would be a medieval vampire family rather than the visualization of the modern vampires in popular fiction works like the Blade movies.

New Brujah Carthage City

When we first started, we were a clan and a vampire army without a place to call home. I recall having performed many of my first embracements on some shopping mall’s rooftop simply because we didn’t have another option. This led me to look into building in SL, and was followed by the foundation of Carthage city. I meant to make it a vampyric utopia, a home for the clan in medieval architecture and taste. Well, this brought forth the need for income. If you occupy land in SL, you have to pay for it, and our city was occupying a great deal of land. I didn’t want to mix the clan’s family structure with financial necessities and donations, so somehow the clan needed to be self-sufficient in its own finances.

New Brujah Carthage City. First Club

What we had in our hands was hundreds of clan members and my limited building skills. Whether be clothes, hairstyles, accessories, weapons or anything else you can imagine – shopping is a necessity in SL. And shopping malls’ success is pretty much relevant to how things work in real life.
If a shopping mall in SL has a good number visitors who spend a resonable time on the mall’s land, its traffic ratings increase which takes it up in search listings. All these factors combined, if your mall has good traffic, you can rent you shop slots to designers and shopkeepers for descent rental prices. So my solution was to build a vampyric night club with levels of vampyric clothing and accessories stores. Having said it like this, it may sound easy but believe me putting all these together is almost as challenging as in real life. However, I am glad we have succeeded in our venture and created a financially self-sufficient community.

On the down-side, all of this got me addicted to building and improving my skills in SL

Vampire Mall and Club (Club Carthage)

How do you feel being a Vamp leader, a King in SL? which are the disadvantages and benefits?
What´s the better future you consider for your clan?

Again, the answer to this really depends what kind of a vampire leader you want to be. Most high-ranking ones are unreachable by their members except a priviliged few and follow a strict code of hierarchy and have fancy titles. In Bloodlines ranking system, I was one of the few kings but always opposed to be called so, because I was merely a vampire lord – nothing more nothing less.

And I did my best to personally take care of clan members’ problems and requests which requires patience and many sleepless nights. Now looking back, I can’t say that I was a perfect leader and had my fair share of questionable decisions but I always tried to be equally fair and just towards everyone despite their vampire rank, age, backgrounds, or preferences.

And its easy to lose your grasp of consciousness and become one once you have many minions and followers looking forward to your commands and will.

Now this may sound like I am promoting a democracy, but I did not. The hierarchy I structured was solely based on merits and dedication – not favoritism. So everyone knew what they had to do to advance in the clan.

Till now, only a few people knew the true reason of my departure from second life and many wonder why I have left everything behind and disappeared overnight when I was at the peak as much as one can be in second life.

When you look into history and literature, the greatest stories are actually based on love, specifically a man’s love for a woman. A straight-forward and best known example of these is Shakespeare’s immortal work Romeo and Juliet. But when you look deep into more modern works which are associated with other things, its actually the same reason.

Say for example, Bram Stoker’s Dracula. I don’t consider it a horror story of a frightening blood-sucking vampire but the tragedy of a prince who has turned into what he is following the unbearable pain of losing his true love. Within that story, it was prince Vlad who denied God and embraced the devil when he found out that his true love died while he was fighting in the name of God against the Turks. And all he did was trying to win back his love when he came upon her reincarnation a few centuries later.

My second example is Star Wars. Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker’s submittal to the dark side of the force was solely an attempt to save her from certain death which he was made to believe was possible through discovering the mysteries of the force’s dark side. And this led to the creation of history’s most famous and popular villain Darth Vader and altered the fate of a galaxy.

In my own way, I have the potential and tendency to transform into Dracula or Darth Vader. And the failure of a true romance in my second life was triggering this urge. I could either submit to my dark side turn into a tyran and destroy everything me and a lot of people have worked hard to achieve or I could step down and disappear.

I chose to save my clan from myself and made my self-righteous sacrifice. I do not expect to be understood and I know this decision was not easy for many people. It wasn’t easy for me either, but it needed to be done.

A little info about you in real life, you want to tell us, please

Lets say I am above my mid 20s and had my fair share of travelling, living, and life. I was once a young foreign policy adviser in United Nations but my experience there made me lose my hope in the institution and the dream that it can make the world a better place. Then I was a soldier for a period to fulfill military service, and for the past 2-3 years I am a consultant in a risk management company conducting private investigations and commercial intelligence.

I am currently located in the city once known as Constanstinople, today’s Istanbul, and the most accurate description about me was made by a friend who identified me as a “perfectionist melancholic”

Favorite places you recomend to visit in SL?

Its been more than two months since I have quit second life and I honestly can not recall any specific locations which I can recommend. There is something for everyone and every taste in SL, just type in the key words for your interest and travel around without prejudice. Being considered a builder by some, I know how much effort it takes to create even a simple place in second life so as many locations as possible should be visited and appreciated to further encourage their improvement.

But no date is given for that day and its just a prophecy, time will show what will happen.

Lets ask his vampire clan Knights what they think about Insomnis, how they met him in SL, any anecdote can tell us, few words about his lost Lord:

1.- When did you meet Insomnis?

My first meeting with insomnis was on 8th june 2008 after my alt avatar was embraced as a vampire and abandoned by my liege, i was left to try and work out my hud and figure out what being a vampire in sl was all about.
Insomnis offered me friendship, he was very kind explaining how the bloodlines system worked and welcoming me to brujah clan as his minion.

2.- How was your work with him at NEW BRUJAH CARTHAGE vampire clan?

Soon after leaving brujah clan with insomnis when he created NEW BRUJAH CARTHAGE clan i wanted to change avatars and fangs was born.
I soon became good friends with insomnis helping him in any way possible with his work building up the clan, supporting him when he was busy building our first clan castle and later rebuilding the fabled city of Carthage.
I had many good times partying at the first club at our city, then at carthage vampire mall and club (Club Carthage) making many friends in the process.

3.- What do you think about “Insomnis” the Legend, and his departure?

It was a shame he felt the need to leave but he had his reasons which i respect, hopefully one day he will return.

4.- What do you desire for the future of the clan?

Insomnis returning from his self imposed exile.

5.- Favourite places you recommend to visit in Sl?

Too many to mention.

6.- A little info about you in real life, if you want to tell us? please

37, from the uk, im a water mains engineer for my local water company, i live with my partner of 16 years and my two daughters who are 11+14 yrs old, im a big fan of West Ham United football club.

I am a dutch man, 40, married and on daughter.

I meet Insomnis the day i became a Vampire because Hotty my Lige at this time, she turned and trained me was a Knight and close Friend to Insomnis so it was the 13th of July 2008

I became a Vampire cause of all these ppl we were a great Family ….no Drama having Fun and enjoying Life what we had in mind and exactly that let us grow so i became Knighted by Insomnis when i was still a Noob in this RP with two souls fighting side by side with Insomnis so he was always listenting to me if it was his Idea or i was fighting his Idea we were talking about it sometimes he profed me wrong the other day i was able to do that with him ….. so i was working and fighting side by side with Insomnis at the core of the Clan

3.- What do you think about “Insomnis” the Legend, and his departure?

Well i bothered my Mind with that as well and i was also asking a lot of ppl about it ….. Many PPL Knights trusted ones departured the clan and he was in trouble he was fighting his own mind and I had a look at comment at Bloodlines Web Page whos intersted it was the comment to the electrum Portion

well as all of you may know the Clan died with Insomnis departure!!!!!!!!!! I ve been told lies and so i elected Radek as our King as well but i was right with my first thought that Radek is not the King (not able to run the Clan) as the day Insomnis left the Clan was up 750 Members and Today as i write this i just had a look 415 Memeber …so have a look yourself and to tell it yes 75 PPl are still under Insonis Liege in the New Brujah Carthage so add them if you wish.

RL – yep i ve got one . I live in Rechtenbach about 60Km north of Frankfurt am Main (Germany)
age – 31 Date of birht 13.05.1977 and no i dont need a Birthday Present from Radek
Job – working my ass of in an office dealing with Complaints and other things noone else is interested in but they have to be done and the evil ones send them all to me as they make the day funny ^^ and time running much faster *grins*
ah and RL Hobbies …… I´m breeding Pigeons and also my Dog as well as meeting friends ……..and yes i ve still got Friends hard to believe but i need them in RL
everyhing else just IM me and ask the worst posible answer is no ^^

I met insomnis as I was hunted by some vampire hunters. That was the first time I spoke to him.

2.- How was your work with him at NEW BRUJAH CARTHAGE vampire clan?

I didn’t work with him much…but he seemed to be a great respectful person.
I loved and miss his Lyrics he always wrote on the Group notes.
somehow it was the way I felt …

3.- What do you think about “Insomnis” the Legend, and his departure?

I thought he would say his friends goodbye..but well..was his decision and I will not judge his way..maybe was this way to let us go easier …who knows..??

4.- What do you desire for the future of the clan?

a strong Leadeship. Our Leader has to be there to protect his all childs.
To cares and be available , answer question and meet up with his Knights. make decisions and plans together with the Knights and share his thoughts, being fair but strong.

1. Carthage Night club,( Rock clubs)

6.- A little info about you in real life, if you want to tell us? please

I am a 30 years old unmarried woman. Have learnt industrial clerk but educate further myself in my occupation to a personal manager.
Germany is for now the RL home for me and my 5 years old son.
My hobbies are kidding with my son, reading books, write vampire books by myself, skiing , visit new places (museums also), listen to great music tunes and spend time with my friends and yes to chat so I am SL adiccted..lol
Actually my hobby list could be longer, I love so many things to do, but my time is bordered, so that are only things I can do at the moment

1.- When did you meet Insomnis?

It was around the end of August 2008, was actually my second day in the Clan and third probably as a vampire, I met him in our previous Clan’s mall, during one of our parties, I still rember the moment very clearly, he was dancing in the middle of the floor, as a normal member, I got introduced to Him by my Liege and dindn’t know how to address him…and i was so surprised by his easy way and at the same time the respect that everybody has for him.

2.- How was your work with him at NEW BRUJAH CARTHAGE vampire clan?

Well, to let you understand the change that this Clan made in my SL, before I joined New Brujah Carthage I was logged in quite rarely, sometimes they passed months without entering.

After that, I started to log in almost every day. My experience with him was great, I found him to be a great great great leader, he has always sometimes to give me advices, to talk to me, many times while i was carrying out the rite of embracing new vampire he came in my help to teach me the right way to do it untill the end.

Very nice personality, with a great sense of humor that was put in use to make all the situation very pleasant. Thanks to him and have developed my leadership skills. As a vampire I owe him everything, he pushed me and encouraged me to improve, till I become one of the Knight of the Clan’s Council.

3.- What do you think about “Insomnis” the Legend, and his departure?

His Legend is actually true, he his still the most respected vampire in SL, his conduct, his philosophy made a ’school’ on how to be a vampire in SL. He left us the vision of a clan were honour is the first rule, were the RL idea of multiculturalism in a RP aspect is carried on as it is in the legend of Carthage, were different races, even Kine (human) and Kindred (vampires) were walking together in the same streets, living together like brethren.
And this, his IDEA is much more than Insomnis his-self, it’s his legacy to us, that we will carry, each one of us in his way, but still, following his original idea.

The environment he created in our sims was unique, everyone could walk in our lands, feeling the atmosphere of brotherhood and kindness within the clan and towards the others. I won’t exagerate saying that our mall was a croos road not only for the Vampire wolrd of SL, but for SL itself.

I still don’t understand well why he left us without a word; to be honest his departure was a kind of SHOCK for all of us, actually i couldn’t believe it. He was the Clan, he was our guide, our inspiration in making our Vision of Carthage become true…I felt lost in the first days, as we all did.
In the last days of his presence, he looked really tired, ofthen he told me he was in a very stressfull moment of his life.

I’m sure that being a leader of such a big clan, and carry it on in the way he was doing, in a magistral way, is not easy, and RL, well RL has it’s own issues and troubles which come first.
His legend will live with us, we will carry it on, and if one day he will be back from his torpor, we will be here for him, all happy to have him back.
I hope he is fine, having fun adn enjoying his time in the place where this torpor took him.
The only thing I really would have asked him before to leave was one last message to tell us something about his choice

4.- What do you desire for the future of the clan?

Of course, we all would want Insomnis back, but this is not something upon which we can plan our future.
I expect to carry on our vision, which can not be exactly the same of our King, since every person has his onw interpretation of reality, but it will be a continue of his legacy.

I’m expecting an everyday more and more prosperous Carthage, were ppl from all over Sl can come and meet to have fun and know each others, partecipating ot our vision, enlarging it, being part of it.
I see a multicultural, multiethnich clan (within the SL races lol) where ppl will have an incredible RP experience.
I expect for our future that our family our Clan well prosper, and that we, all united will continue our path.

The Knights of Carthage together with our Primogene Radek Urvilan will work to make the vision continue its path.

Carthage, Carthage, Carthage!!

Lost Garden of Apollo, besides the constant lag, no better place ofr a realxing and romantic walkabout

6.- A little info about you in real life, if you want to tell us? please

Ok, I’m Italian, live close to Milan, 27, male.
I’ve an MBA of first level and I’m a businessman. I travel a lot for work and for passion,
I have truly a deep love for Asia, it’s places, cultures and languages.
In my free time i love to practice martial arts, meditation and swimming ,( possibly in the sea lol)

I like reading and my favourite books are all the Dune saga, The Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Tolkien, Papillon, and the Commedia by Dante Alighieri. But the literature character that inspire me the most would definitely be Ulysses

I’m Mediterranean type, love this area tradition and places.
The sea is my favourite landascape, gives me inspiration, emotions ad sense of freedom.

1.- When did you meet Insomnis?
I met Insomnis the 2nd day I was a vampire.

2.- How was your work with him at NEW BRUJAH CARTHAGE vampire clan?
I love Insom. He was fair and great to be around. When I first met him we chatted for a little bit then before I left he gave me a coffin and some clothes. It was a lasting impression and I will never forget it.

3.- What do you think about “Insomnis” the Legend, and his departure?
I thought it sucked to be honest. Still cant get a straight answer about why he left. I was talking to him the day of his deoarture and it seemed as if nothing was wrong.

4.- What do you desire for the future of the clan?
That is the big question right now. I hope the clan goes on and flourishes but with all the strife I find it hard to imagine.
