Itziar Okariz (Donostia, Spain, 1965) produces actions shedding a critical look on the formation of social stereotypes.
Her work Irrintzi is an action or performance documented on video.
An irrintzi is a traditional Basque scream often performed on special occasions, to express joy. It is believed to have been originated as a communication system throughout the vast distances of the Basque valleys. In this sense the scream becomes a basic syntax in the limits of language.
Previously performed at the Guggenheim Musem Bilbao for the exhibition “Chacun à son goût (Each to their own taste)”, 2007 the artist walked around the museum shouting out irrintzis and generating different types of resonances in each room.
For the performance in New York on Sunday, March 30th 2008 at 3:00 p.m., Itziar Okariz “Irrintzi Repetition” will take place on the corner of Bowery and Grand Street (google maps), a crossway of Chinatown and the Lower East Side neighborhoods.
